Music Sucks

Music Sucks

What is bad music?

If someone were to bring up the topic “things the world can’t agree on”, chances are the best genre of music wouldn’t be in the top 10. Or 20. Or 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, etc., you get the point. Despite not being in the planet’s top 100 priorities , discussions on what good music is, and isn’t, happen frequently  between friends, relatives, classmates, or even complete strangers. These conversations usually start with statements like “yo man, omg, did you hear that new band SuperBand on 99.9 Amazing Radio? DUDE! They were sick!” then usually followed by “LOL Radio Music is teh suck brah! lolololol” and finally concluded by “No, you!’. Although it may seem silly upon first read, these discussions really do sound like this. Despite the hundreds of different sounding musical genres available for ear consumption, no one can agree on a single song being good. The Beatles? Micheal Jackson? MC Hammer? Despite having huge mainstream appeal, there are still thousands of people who can’t stand listening to any of them. The fact that fails to register in the heads of those having the “best music ever” discussions is: music is opinionated. One album can change a person’s life, while the same album could possibly make another person sick. Let me say it again, music is opinionated.

Bad Music

The only reason people have

these silly discussions about who is the best artist ever is to fill their own desire of knowing who, or what is the best. Humans have it hardwired in their head that they must rank everything to choose the very best. Think about it, what don’t you rank? You go to the grocery store and on your way you sort out the best way to get there, the hottest girl, or guy on the way there, the best food to buy once you’re there, and then the best way to pay for it. Everything is chosen depending on what is the best option. However, as with music, everything just listed is chosen based on opinion. You aren’t choosing what is the best, you are choosing your favorite. The best method to pay with your groceries is by cash, but if you can’t afford it then you’ll likely be using a credit card. The best food is healthy stuff, not your favorite chocolate covered pretzels you just put into the cart. Notice the pattern? Although you often choose your favorites, rather than the best when it comes to food, and payments, you have no choice when it comes to music. There is no definitive best artist, band, or group. It comes down to favoritism.

Can you imagine how boring the music industry would be if there were a “best’ album? One that everybody loved so much it didn’t make sense to listen to anything else? Every other band, artist, and/or group would just keep pumping out music until they realized there’s no point, there not the best. For mainstream recognition purposes let’s say it was the Black Eyed Peas. Can you imagine if the only music played was Black Eyed Peas? And because it was identified by your brain as the best you wouldn’t bother listening to anything else, only the sounds made by BEP. You would be stripped of all creativity because what use to be opinion would be mutated into mainstream common sense. How is this possible? Think about it, do you ever dispute the Healthy Eating Food Guide? I’ve never seen any protests outside Healthy Eating HQ disputing that bacon is better than fresh fish, or chicken. Why? Because it’s common sense thanks to the messages the media has pushed into our heads. I am in no way disputing the food guide, I’m just comparing it with music. Yeah, the food guide is backed by scientific proof, but so could the music. Some bullshit theory about what good music looks like could easily be made up in some corporate office, or even by the government. The point of this paragraph, which has carried on pretty damn long, is that it is impossible to declare what is good, and what is bad music.

Another love hate relationship between music and humans is the need to rebel. Some humans possess the gene that tells them ‘it may be too good to be true’. This is a dangerous gene. This gene tells the person that there is more beyond what everyone else likes, or does. It can be summed up as creativity. The gene created the indie/underground scene. Now, I am not going to deliver a speech defining what is indie/underground music, but I will in the future. Instead I am going to take this time to talk shit about hardcore indie/underground listeners. Everybody knows people like this, you may even be one. Step 1 is realization. These people automatically hate artists once they reach success. Anything on the radio music be horrible because they have reached mainstream success, and the mainstream is stupid, so it’s stupid music. No! What is wrong with you! It makes absolutely no sense to adore an artist because they have no recognition for their talent. Now, I am not talking about artists who switch up their style once they reach a level of fame to sell more records, it makes sense to stop listening to them. I am talking about ditching a consistent artist strictly because of the reason other people like them. Why? Why would you do that? Pleas explain it to me! Also, on a lesser level I dislike when people make the statement “mainstream music sucks”. But as I said earlier, this will be discussed in the future. I’m holding myself back on that one, for today.

That’s all folks. I’m sure hearing more of this discussion will spark a few more points that I’ll include in a part 2, of what hopefully is a less intimating post filled with less large blocks of text.

Stop the hate! Music sucks.
